Understanding Your Coverage
While every plan is unique, here are a few general rules of thumb when it comes to typical dental insurance policies.
Typical Percentages
Many plans use a 100-80-50 structure: 100% coverage for preventive care, 80% for basic procedures (like fillings), and 50% for major work (like crowns).
What's Covered
Insurance typically covers routine exams, cleanings, X-rays, fillings, root canals, extractions, crowns, and bridges.
What's Not Covered
Cosmetic procedures such as teeth whitening and veneers are rarely covered. Adult clear aligner treatment may also be excluded depending on your specific plan.
Waiting Periods
Be aware that some plans enforce a waiting period (often 6 to 12 months) before they will cover major restorative work. Preventive care is usually covered immediately.
